The power of the spoken word

Recently, in my quest to fulfill my responsibility as a believer, that is to save the lost from their agony, I have come to the following realization: today’s Christian speaks in a foreign tongue and he actually thinks that he is providing for the needs of his neighbor. He speaks a spiritual language to those for whom it’s incomprehensible.

I will begin by using a scripture which encompasses and identifies the Lord’s mission (which should be mine as well) here on Earth. In John 3, Nicodemus seeks Jesus by night and shares an insightful conversation with him. While he is quick to praise Jesus by saying that truly God must be with him in order to perform the miracles that he does. Jesus responds by saying that Nicodemus he must be born of water and of the Spirit. And thereafter states that flesh gives birth to flesh and the Spirit gives birth to spirit. Here He identifies the two births of a man which everyone who desires to enter the kingdom of God must comply. I would like to focus on the phrase, flesh gives birth to flesh.

Though the natural man doesn’t comprehend the things of the Spirit, he surely understands things in the flesh. And, this is a grave omission committed by “spiritual” women or men born of the Spirit. We speak spiritual things to those who cannot comprehend them and wonder why it is that they’re not motivated by our elocution. And, the truth is that the Bible is the spoken word of God and it is to be discerned through the Spirit. The Bible is not written for the unbeliever rather for Christian. Therefore, when the man of God speaks the Word, he must interpret in order for flesh to comprehend it in it’s terms, in it’s tongue.

In our zeal, we have ignored the power of our own words. We are the only specie that is able to speak for that reason. In order to seek out the worshipper in Spirit and in truth and not machines, Jehova God had to share the power that he enjoyed exclusively, the ability to give life. This is how everything that is came to be. But, now, what is it that we do with our own words? Though some might argue that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Well, truth is, that words do hurt and they have an eternal impact. They will always be heard somewhere, they will echo in someone’s soul. Sound waves flow continuously and eternally. They are not able to be stopped. They resonate in the hearts and minds of everyone whom we have touched in the most intimate way…the spoken word. I ask members of the Body to think of their past and listen to their mother’s voice or their father’s. This is easy to do and it’s especially easy to hear the hurtful, the negative which was spoken. Although some might say that words don’t hurt them…well, they definitely do. The Bible says that a man who is able to control his tongue, can control the rest of his body and it is true. We have the power to breathe life or initiate death, and I’ve learned that if it is that I find myself speaking for fun, I seek silence. I seek solitude where I can meditate, or pray and speak to He who is good at listening to my concerns. Friends shouldn’t be there when you don’t need them, rather when you do. And, I try to be that friend. It is wise to listen before speaking and I believe that we can avoid the world’s conflicts if we did that. Listen a lot and the speak a little. He who speaks less, wins the argument. And, a wise men says so much with very few words. I hope this day that I perfect the art of listening and leave the speaking for when it’s due.
